Exceptional sculptural ceramic vase entitled Madrona by Los Angeles-based artist Mirena Kim, featuring a striking architectural silhouette and richly textured matte black finish.
Introduced in 2018, Mirena Kim's celebrated Madrona series explores sculptural form through individually created ceramic vessels. Although sharing a recognizable architectural silhouette, each piece is a unique expression of the artist's hand, with subtle variations in proportion, surface texture, and finish.
Standing an impressive 15.5 inches tall, this elegant studio pottery vessel combines a slender, elongated cylindrical body with a subtly defined shoulder, angular transitions, and a gracefully tapering neck. The beautifully balanced proportions create an almost anthropomorphic presence, while the tactile, hand-worked surface introduces an organic warmth that contrasts with its decidedly modernist form.
Kim's distinctive artistic approach explores the relationship between material, structure, and sculptural expression. Her ceramics frequently feature elongated, seemingly gravity-defying forms, with restrained silhouettes and earthy, understated finishes that allow the inherent character of the clay to take center stage.
The Madrona is a wonderful example of contemporary minimalist design, equally compelling as a standalone sculptural object or incorporated into a thoughtfully curated arrangement of modern ceramics.
Its dramatic matte black finish and commanding vertical profile make it particularly suited to Mid-Century Modern, contemporary, minimalist, Brutalist-inspired, and organic-modern interiors.
A beautifully conceived piece of contemporary American studio pottery that effortlessly blurs the distinction between functional vessel and sculptural art.
