Rare MCM Japanese-American Designer Harry Osaki Hand-Wrought Sterling Silver Modernist Statement Necklace

An exceptional and remarkably uncommon hand-wrought sterling silver modernist necklace by Japanese-American metalsmith Harry Osaki, whose distinctive postwar work is recognized for its substantial construction, restrained ornamentation and sculptural simplicity.

This dramatic necklace is composed of nine graduated trapezoidal sterling silver panels, individually linked to create a bold architectural collar. Each panel has a subtly irregular hand-worked form and beautifully reflective surface, allowing the necklace to move fluidly while retaining its strong geometric presence.

The graduated panels lead into elongated, three-dimensional sterling silver bar links on either side before terminating at the clasp. The result is a striking balance between mass and movement — substantial in weight at 86.3 grams, yet remarkably elegant when worn.

Osaki's work reflects the postwar American studio-jewelry movement, where traditional hand-working techniques were combined with increasingly abstract and modernist forms. His silver was already receiving national attention by the late 1940s and 1950s, and surviving examples are most commonly encountered as smaller jewelry pieces or hand-wrought hollowware and flatware. 1949, The New Yorker described his work as less well known than Porter Blanchard or Allan Adler but praised its design and execution, and by 1955 his hand-wrought silver was still being specifically recommended to sophisticated buyers.

Harry Osaki worked in Pasadena and was active from the late 1940s; surviving documentation consistently describes his work as hand-wrought, and specialist sources note that his jewelry is particularly rare. A 2021 Bonhams Skinner catalog for a signed 14K Osaki pendant explicitly called him an important Japanese-American silversmith and said his jewelry is “quite rare.”

This necklace is particularly noteworthy for its large scale, articulated construction and strong sculptural character. AS well as the fact that I have never seen an Osaki necklace for sale, only pendants, rings, cuffs, brooches and silverware of course.

The necklace remains in excellent vintage condition. There are scattered fine surface scratches and minor signs of wear consistent with age and careful use, but no significant dents, damage or structural issues noted. Because of the highly reflective sterling surfaces, some lines and shadows visible in the photographs are reflections rather than flaws.

A superb example of American mid-century studio jewelry and an unusually substantial work by Harry Osaki — equally compelling as wearable jewelry or sculptural design.
